Which Smart Visiting Card Should You Buy? NFC vs QR vs Digital-Only Compared

By Visiting Cards Store Editorial Team | Published | Buying Guides
A plain-English comparison of NFC, QR code and digital-only visiting cards, with a comparison table, buying checklist and mistakes to avoid.
Choosing a smart visiting card comes down to one question, and answering it before you browse saves time and money: how will the people you meet open your details? This guide compares the three formats sold in the Visiting Cards Store — NFC cards, QR code cards and digital-only cards — so you can buy the right one first time. It covers how each format works, where each one falls short and what to cheque before you pay.
Short answer: most people should buy a card that carries both an NFC chip and a printed QR code, because it works on every modern phone. Choose digital-only if you mostly network online, and choose a review or social media card if your goal is reviews or followers rather than contacts.What is a smart visiting card?
A smart visiting card is a card that opens an online page instead of only showing printed text. The page is usually a contact profile with your name, role, phone number, email, website, social links and a button to save you as a contact. Because the card points to a page rather than holding the details itself, you can change the page at any time and every card you have already handed out shows the update.
There are three common ways to open that page:
- NFC — a small chip inside the card. The other person holds the card near the back of an NFC-enabled phone and the page opens.
- QR code — a printed square code. The other person points their phone camera at it and taps the link that appears.
- Digital-only — no physical card. You share a link or show a QR code on your own screen.
How each format works
NFC cards
NFC stands for near-field communication. It is the same short-range technology used for contactless payments. The chip in the card has no battery; the phone powers it for a moment when the two are close together, reads a web address stored on the chip and opens it in the browser. Nothing needs to be installed on either phone.
The cards in our store use an NTAG215 chip. NFC must be supported and switched on in the receiving phone. Most recent iPhones and Android phones read NFC tags, but some older or budget models do not, and some users switch NFC off.
QR code cards
A QR code is a printed pattern that encodes a web address. Any phone with a working camera can read one, usually straight from the camera app. QR codes need light and a steady hand, and they need to be printed at a sensible size, but they do not depend on any chip inside the receiving phone. That makes QR the most universal of the three methods.
A dynamic QR code points to an address that redirects to your profile, so the destination can be changed without reprinting the card. A static code is fixed forever. For a visiting card you almost always want a dynamic one.
Digital-only cards
A digital-only card is just the profile with its own link and QR code. You share it by text, email or messaging apps, put it in your email signature, or show the QR code on your phone screen at a meeting. There is nothing to post, so no delivery address is needed.
NFC vs QR vs digital-only: comparison table
| NFC + QR card | QR-only card | Digital-only | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical card to hand over | Yes | Yes | No |
| Opens with a tap | Yes, on NFC-enabled phones | No | No |
| Opens with a camera scan | Yes | Yes | Yes, if you show the code |
| Works if the other phone has no NFC | Yes, via the QR code | Yes | Yes |
| Can be shared remotely | Yes, via the profile link | Yes, via the profile link | Yes |
| Details editable after printing | Yes | Yes, with a dynamic code | Yes |
| Needs delivery | Yes | Yes | No |
| App needed by the recipient | No | No | No |
The combined NFC and QR card is the format we recommend for most buyers because each method covers the other's weak point: the tap is quicker when it works, and the QR code is the fallback when it does not.
Which one should you buy?
Buy an NFC + QR card if…
- you meet people face to face at meetings, events or on site;
- you want something physical to hand over that does not go out of date;
- you want the quickest possible exchange, with a fallback for phones without NFC.
Browse smart visiting cards in PVC, metal and wood. The finish changes the look and price, not the features: every finish carries the same chip, QR code and editable profile. Our guide to PVC, metal and wood card materials compares how each finish feels and lasts.
Choose digital-only if…
- most of your networking happens online, by email or on video calls;
- you want to try a smart profile before buying a printed card;
- you do not need anything posted.

Choose a review card if…
your goal is more customer reviews rather than sharing contact details. A review card for Google, Tripadvisor or Trustpilot opens your review form directly, so customers do not need to search for your listing. Read how Google review cards work and where to place them before you order.
Choose a social media card if…
you want people to follow one account. A social media card opens Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, Facebook or WhatsApp with your profile loaded. Our comparison of Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn NFC cards explains the versions.
Choose a sticker, stand or wristband if…
a card is the wrong shape for where the prompt needs to be. Review stickers, stands, plaques and NFC wristbands do the same job on a till, counter, wall or wrist.
Buying checklist
Before you order, cheque each of these:
- Goal. Contacts, reviews or followers? That decides the category.
- Format. If you want a physical card, pick one with both NFC and a QR code.
- Dynamic destination. Make sure the card points to a profile you can edit later.
- Finish. PVC is the entry point; metal and wood are premium finishes with the same features.
- Personalisation. Have your name, role, links and logo ready to enter at checkout.
- Proof. Check the digital proof carefully before approving — production starts after approval.
- Monthly costs. Confirm what is a one-off purchase and what is an optional add-on. In our store the card and its profile are a one-off purchase; tools such as the CRM, analytics and bookings are optional.
- Delivery. Delivery is free on every order in our store, and digital-only products need no address.
- Returns. Personalised items are excluded from the standard cancellation period, so read the Refund & Returns policy before you buy.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a static QR code. If the code cannot be redirected, a new job or phone number means reprinting.
- Relying on NFC alone. Some phones cannot read NFC, or have it switched off. A printed QR code removes that risk.
- Putting too much on the profile. Lead with the details people need most: name, role, phone, email and one or two key links.
- Skipping the proof. A typo in a printed name or role is the one thing you cannot edit later.
- Using one card for every goal. A contact card and a review card do different jobs. If you need both, buy both.
- Forgetting to test. When the card arrives, scan and tap it once yourself before handing it out.
Frequently asked questions
Do people need an app to open a smart visiting card?
No. Both NFC and QR codes open the profile in the phone's normal web browser.
Will an NFC card work with every phone?
Not every phone. NFC needs to be supported and switched on. That is why a card with a printed QR code as well is the safer choice.
Can I change my details after the card is printed?
Yes, as long as the card points to an editable profile. You change the profile and every card already handed out shows the new details.
Is a metal card better than a PVC card?
It looks and feels more premium, but it works the same way. Every finish in our store carries the same chip, QR code and profile.
Is digital-only enough on its own?
It is enough if you mostly share details online. If you meet people in person, a physical card is easier to hand over and harder to forget.
What does delivery cost?
Delivery is free on every order in the Visiting Cards Store. Digital-only products are not posted.
